The Special Areas Board (SAB) is a unique form of local government located in southeastern Alberta. Established through the Special Areas Act in 1938, we provide government services and public land management to residents and businesses over 5 million acres.

 

At Special Areas, we deliver the municipal services our residents depend on, from grading roads to potable water to emergency and enforcement. We manage over 2.5 million acres of public lands, supporting our ratepayers through the administration of community pastures and leasing public lands for grazing and cultivation. We work with partners in the region to support economic development and rural stabilization, and we help visitors reconnect with the land and sky in our recreation areas and campgrounds.

The Special Areas Board requires a temporary full-time employee for an 18-month term position in the Special Area No. 2 (Hanna) Office. Reporting to the District Office Manager, the successful applicant will provide frontline customer service to ratepayers and support the daily operations of the District Office. The ideal candidate enjoys a busy, dynamic, and varied work environment and is comfortable managing multiple priorities simultaneously. This position involves working with a diverse range of stakeholders, including ratepayers, contractors, and professionals. A friendly, approachable manner combined with professionalism, accuracy, and strong organizational skills is essential.
What You’ll Do
  • Provide administrative support to the Special Area No. 2 Administrator, Office Manager, and Agricultural Fieldman.
  • Deliver customer service support, including back up reception coverage and responding to inquiries from ratepayers and stakeholders.
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, letters, and memos and process invoicing, payments, and collection of arrears
  • Administer and process applications related to leases, land exchanges, permits, community pastures, road construction, and hamlets.
  • Maintain records, assist with data entry and document management with attention to detail and high degree of accuracy and initiative.
  • Utilize and update mapping and spatial data using ArcGIS to support land administration, planning, and reporting functions.
  • Assist with special projects and general office operations as required.
What You’ll Need
  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED); post-secondary education in Office Administration, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with highly developed oral and written abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally using courtesy, tact, and discretion when responding to inquiries, complaints, and requests for clarification
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and related applications)
  • Experience with ArcGIS or other mapping/GIS software is an asset

Position
  • Hourly Rate starting at $28.0566 – $34.3231 depending upon relevant education, skills and experience.
  • In addition to the hourly rate of pay, earnings include:
    • * 5.2 percent of regular wage earnings as holiday pay and
    • * 6 percent of regular wage earnings as annual vacation pay.
  • Compensation based on a 36.25-hour week – Overtime may be required during peak periods of operation.
