The Special Areas Board (SAB) is a unique form of local government located in southeastern Alberta. Established through the Special Areas Act in 1938, we provide government services and public land management to residents and businesses over 5 million acres.

At Special Areas, we deliver the municipal services our residents depend on, from grading roads to potable water to emergency and enforcement. We manage over 2.5 million acres of public lands, supporting our ratepayers through the administration of community pastures and leasing public lands for grazing and cultivation. This position will be based within Special Areas 2, 3 and 4, supporting industry development activities across the region. Work will involve both office-based coordination and field inspections throughout the Special Areas service area. Join our team and play a key role in supporting responsible industry development across the Special Areas.

You will help ensure that infrastructure associated with industrial developments—such as wind, solar, and oil and gas projects—meets Special Areas standards and permitting requirements. This position works closely with developers, engineers, contractors, and internal staff to coordinate approvals, monitor construction activities, and maintain the integrity of Special Areas transportation and servicing infrastructure.

What You’ll Do
  • Review and address infrastructure requirements related to transportation, drainage, and road approaches associated with industrial projects
  • Conduct field inspections and site visits related to industry developments and infrastructure modifications
  • Inspect construction of road approaches and other infrastructure improvements to ensure compliance with Special Areas standards and specifications
  • Provide interpretation of Special Areas Servicing Standards to developers, consultants, engineers, and internal staff
  • Maintain inspection documentation and provide technical and administrative support for operational services activities
What You’ll Need
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent (GED) – combination of experience/education will be considered
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in operational infrastructure, preferably within a rural municipal setting
  • Working knowledge of municipal engineering, development, transportation, and construction practices
  • Ability to interpret and apply servicing standards, technical drawings, and infrastructure specifications
  • Effective communication and interpersonal and a high level of computer literacy (Microsoft Office)
  • Physical capabilities to perform job duties – required lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence

Preference may be given to candidates possessing:

  • Experience with Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Important Considerations 
  • This position will be working outside completing fieldwork in rural-remote areas.
  • Availability to work from April/May through September/October.

Term Seasonal
2026 Positions
  • Hourly Rates starting at $35.4773 – $43.0135 (as of April 1, 2026) depending upon classification, relevant education, skills and experience.
  • In addition to the hourly rate of pay, earnings include
    • 5.2 percent of regular wage earnings as holiday pay and
    • 6 percent of regular wage earnings as annual vacation pay
  • Compensation based on a 40-hour week – Overtime may be required.
