The Special Areas Board (SAB) is a unique form of local government located in southeastern Alberta. Established through the Special Areas Act in 1938, we provide government services and public land management to residents and businesses over 5 million acres.

At Special Areas, we deliver the municipal services our residents depend on, from grading roads to potable water to emergency and enforcement. We manage over 2.5 million acres of public lands, supporting our ratepayers through the administration of community pastures and leasing public lands for grazing and cultivation. We work with partners in the region to support economic development and rural stabilization, and we help visitors reconnect with the land and sky in our recreation areas and campgrounds

Make your season count by gaining hands-on experience with as a Survey Technician to support survey operations for land management, construction projects and infrastructure maintenance. Whether you’re starting your career or bringing related field experience, this role has you outdoors supporting surveying and mapping activities across the region.

You’ll gain hands on experience with survey setup and takedown, equipment handling, site measurements, data collection, and basic documentation while contributing to accurate records that support projects and infrastructure planning.  You’ll take on meaningful field responsibilities and develop practical skills that can support future opportunities in surveying, engineering, or municipal services from late spring through fall.

What You’ll Do
  • Operate and provide basic care of survey equipment, including total stations, GPS units, and levels
  • Stake out and mark work sites in accordance with project plans and specifications
  • Assist with the preparation and organization of survey drawings, site plans, and related records
  • Participate in site reconnaissance to help identify field conditions and potential issues
  • Work collaboratively with team members to meet project timelines
  • Responsible for adhering to the Special Areas Board Health and Safety Program and all applicable Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) legislation.
  • Perform other duties as required
What You’ll Need
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in geomatics, civil engineering technology or a related field is an asset
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Previous experience in survey work or familiarity with survey equipment is required
  • Strong understanding of survey principles and techniques
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word); familiarity with CAD or GIS software is an asset
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills, self-motivated and able to manage time effectively
  • Physically able to perform fieldwork, including lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.

  • This position will be working outside completing fieldwork in rural-remote areas independently
  • Availability to work from April/May through September/October

2026 Positions
  • Hourly Rates starting at $25.8963 – $46.2959 (as of April 1, 2026) depending upon relevant education, skills and experience
  • In addition to the hourly rate of pay, earnings include
    • 5.2 percent of regular wage earnings as holiday pay (Stat) and
    • 6 percent of regular wage earnings as annual vacation pay
  • This is a seasonal, wage position, scheduled 3 days per week (24 hours total). Additional hours or overtime may be required to meet operational needs and may be approved in accordance with the Collective Agreement and SAB policies.
