Sheerness – Deadfish System

Special Areas works with Alberta Environment & Parks (AEP) to support operations of the Sheerness – Deadfish water system, including irrigation. Special Areas is contracted by AEP to operate this system; AEP remains the owner of the system infrastructure.

The Carolside South Irrigation Advisory Committee (CSIAC) is responsible for advising Special Areas and AEP on the administration and operation of:

  • Sheerness Pipeline
  • Blowdown Canal
  • Carolside Reservoir
  • Janet Reservoir
  • Deadfish Pumphouse, Canal, and Reservoir
  • Woodrow Reservoir

CSIAC includes representatives from irrigation areas in the Sheerness – Deadfish system. These members are elected every four years following municipal elections and are required to reside in the areas they represent. Special Areas appoints an Advisory Councillor as well as the Chairman of CSIAC.

For information related to the operation of the Sheerness – Deadfish water systems, please contact Trent Caskey, Director of Property Administration.

MD of Acadia and Special Areas Joint Irrigation Project

The MD of Acadia & Special Areas Irrigation Project will support the transition of approximately 108,000 acres in east-central Alberta from dryland farming to irrigated farming. It will develop modern irrigation infrastructure on previously cultivated lands with the right agro-climatic conditions and access to water for irrigation.

It will also create new reservoirs to support effective management of water needed for irrigation while providing new recreational opportunities and creating new fish and waterfowl habitats.

In all, the project promises to revitalize our region’s economy by providing new opportunities for employment and economic activity while mitigating the impacts of climate change felt across our communities.
