With the recent public vote in favour of dissolution of the Village of Cereal, the viability review process is moving into its final stages. The viability review – initiated by the Minister of Municipal Affairs - assessed whether the Village of Cereal was operating in a manner that addressed the present and future needs of residents. The Viability Review Report – available online – outlined the findings of the viability review team, and outlined two options for the future of the Village: remain a Village and complete the recommendations in the report or dissolve the Village and become a hamlet within the Special Areas.
With the majority of residents voting for dissolution, Special Areas is working with the Village and Municipal Affairs to begin the transition process for Cereal.
“Special Areas has been working within the Province’s viability review process to make sure residents could make an informed decision about the future of the village. With the public vote now concluded, we now know the majority of residents and property owners of Cereal wish to become part of the Special Areas. We are working closely with Municipal Affairs and the Village as we begin to think about how to transition the community. The Board remains committed to making sure Cereal continues being an attractive and welcoming community within the Special Areas.”
Jordon Christianson, Chair
Special Areas is beginning to work on the transition planning with the Village, although Alberta Municipal Affairs will be moving the formal dissolution process through government. As a part of this transition, Special Areas will be developing scenarios and costs for residents of Cereal to consider which outline the service level options for the hamlet moving forward.
