24 Feb Town of Hanna and Special Areas Begin Bylaw Enforcement Partnership
Beginning March 1, 2022, Special Areas Board Community Peace Officers will begin providing enforcement services to the Town of Hanna on a contracted basis. These services are expected to include enforcement of Town of Hanna municipal bylaws. Special Areas Community Peace Officers can enforce a broader scope of legislation than a municipal bylaw officer – they are not limited to only municipal bylaws.
The current agreement between Special Areas and the Town provides for up to 8 hours a week of enforcement services, which includes patrol time, administration, court time, and other activities related to Town of Hanna bylaw enforcement. This agreement can be reviewed at any time if it no longer meets the needs of the Town or Special Areas.
“Special Areas and the Town of Hanna have a long history of working together to serve our communities. This enforcement services agreement is just one example of our commitment to delivering services in a cost-effective and efficient way. We are excited to see how this partnership evolves over time and are committed to working with the Town to ensure the needs of residents continue to be met.”
Owen Francis, Director of Municipal Services – Special Areas Board
“This joint approach to bylaw enforcement is another example of our good working relationship with the Special Areas.”
Danny Povachuk, Mayor – Town of Hanna
“This agreement with the Special Areas Board gives the Town flexibility and provides enforcement services for situations that cannot be handled through other municipal departments. Special Areas Community Peace Officers, at the direction of the Town of Hanna, will be focusing their time on municipal bylaws and enforcement concerns.”
Kim Neill, CAO – Town of Hanna
The Town of Hanna approached the Special Areas to provide bylaw enforcement in the town beginning March 2022. This service provision is being managed through an agreement between the Town and Special Areas, like other inter-municipal partnerships like firefighting. Special Areas will charge the Town of Hanna for the provision of these services; it is expected to help reduce costs for both parties by working together.
Local bylaws are the jurisdiction of the local municipality. For Town residents, this means you should contact the town office. For Special Areas residents, this means you should contact the local Special Areas district office. If you need immediate assistance, call 911.
Town of Hanna residents are asked to continue submitting bylaw complaints to the Town Office. This can be done over the phone, in-person, or online at https://hanna.ca/report-a-concern.
