19 May New Role at Special Areas for Coordinating Industrial Projects
Special Areas has created a short-term position to help manage permitting and inspections related to new large-scale industrial projects in the region.
The Industry Permits and Inspections Coordinator is a new position designed to be the point of contact for industrial stakeholders for issues related to Road Utilization Agreements and service standards. This position will be responsible for working with industrial stakeholders, including project applicants, developers, consultants, and engineers, to ensure all technical aspects of industrial developments and Special Areas standards are addressed throughout project construction processes. This position will also be responsible for managing the inspection process and ensuring all deficiencies are corrected in a timely and efficient manner.
Currently, there are six large-scale renewable (wind) energy projects in the development phase in our region. These projects result in a significant amount of related construction which impacts roads in the Special Areas, including road improvements, approach construction and road use. Special Areas is committed to protecting local road infrastructure and the municipal investment which has been made into local roads in the region. This new position will ensure Road Utilization and Development Agreements related to large-scale industrial development are fulfilled, and will be able to work with all stakeholders, including local ratepayers, to respond to any complaints or concerns.
We are pleased to share that Wade Heiland has returned from his short-lived retirement to take on this important and challenging role. Wade is the best point of contact if you have any questions or concerns related to permitting, road utilization agreements, and inspections for these large-scale industrial projects. You can reach Wade via email at wade.heiland@specialareas.ab.ca or at (403) 854-0426. For more information on our Roads program, please visit our Roads page.
