Special Areas Response – Grassfire Near Cereal and Lanfine

Special Areas Response – Grassfire Near Cereal and Lanfine

On October 17, 2026, a fast-moving grassfire ignited east of Cereal under extreme conditions, including wind speeds of 90-100km/hr and heavy fuel loads. Fire departments from Big Stone, Cereal, Consort, Hanna, Oyen, the MD of Acadia, Veteran, and Youngstown responded to the incident. Local residents also played a critical role in this response, alongside personnel from ATCO Electric, Dry Country Gas, Special Areas Water Services, and other Special Areas staff members.

The fire travelled northeast of Cereal, then turned and headed southeast towards Lanfine. Strong winds pushed the fire across Highway 9 creating dense smoke and zero visibility, which caused two motor vehicle collisions. Oyen RCMP shut down Highway 9 from Oyen to Cereal, reopening the road when conditions improved.

“Special Areas stood up an Emergency Coordination Centre (ECC) due to high winds and scale and rate of spread of this fire. The ECC was requested by Scene Command to support emergency services on the ground, helping provide additional equipment, contacting ratepayers and utility companies, and organizing food and water for on site emergency staff.” – Ryley Girletz, Special Areas Director of Emergency Management

Despite tireless efforts of responding crews, the grassfire burned an estimated 4,467 acres. One residence, the Lanfine Community Hall, and numerous smaller structures were lost; however, all residents evacuated safely and without injury. Following the initial response, fire crews continued to monitor the scene over the next six days, patrolling affected areas and addressing hotspots and flare-ups to ensure the fire remained out.

“On behalf of Special Areas Emergency Services, we want to thank our volunteer firefighters, their families, and local residents who stepped up during this incident. The dedication of our volunteer firefighters is what keeps our rural fire departments strong, and we simply could not respond to emergencies like this without them. I also want to recognize everyone who contributed to the response effort. It truly took a coordinated team effort to bring this fire under control.”  – Rob Palmer, Special Areas Regional Fire Chief
