12 Jun Road Use Agreements
The Special Areas Road Use Order has been approved, and that means there will be some changes to how Road Use Agreements and permitting is managed in the Special Areas. A Road Use Agreement is a tool used to protect municipal roads by helping Special Areas monitor heavy vehicle traffic, manage wear and tear on the roads, and plan for future maintenance. Enforcement Services monitor roads and ensure Road Use Agreements are enforced to prevent problems like road damage.
Special Areas has used Road Use Agreements in the past to help manage some of the impacts of larger industrial projects and development in the region. The Road Use Order gives Enforcement Services a tool to use when managing road use issues. One of the biggest changes is the requirement for a Road Use Agreement changing to 6 or more loads to the same location in a 24-hour period.
Farmers do not require Road Use Agreements if their vehicle is registered as a Class 2 plate under S. 77 (1)(b) of the Operator Licensing and Vehicle Control Regulations.
Road Use Agreements are required year-round, even when the road ban season is over. A Road Use Agreement will be required:
- If you are exceeding five loads to or from the same destination within a 24-hour period
- For industrial users like gravel trucks and commercial haulers
- For Oil & Gas operations including all drilling and service rigs if exceeding 5 loads for moves
