In Alberta there is a Coyote Predation Management Program (CPMP) to help manage predation of livestock through this provincially designated nuisance pest.
- Coyotes are listed as a nuisance under the Alberta Agricultural Pest Act regulation, giving landowners the ability to control this species on their own lands without Fish & Wildlife tags. Other species with the same pest designation include Richardson’s ground squirrels, magpies, mice & rats.
- All complaints of livestock predation by coyotes should be reported to your Agricultural Fieldmen (inspector’s) for investigation & confirmation.
- In the event of a confirmed coyote predation, the landholder should take immediate remedial action to protect their livestock from further damage. A great resource to get you started: Coyote predation control manual and study guide [2021] – Open Government (alberta.ca)
- If the inspector’s investigation confirms a livestock kill from a coyote and the landowner has taken all necessary precautions outlined in the resource above, the inspector may issue a permit for the use of a toxicant.
- Remember that not all coyotes kill livestock! Killing calves is a learned behaviour, and management approaches should take into consideration the ecosystem biodiversity that this species plays on the grasslands.
