01 Oct Walleye Released at Blood Indian Reservoir
This past September, we tried something new at Blood Indian Reservoir.
Alberta Environment and Parks, together with Special Areas, has been working to reduce Prussian Carp (an invasive species) in the reservoir. As part of this effort, over 1200 fingerling walleye were introduced into Blood Indian.
These walleye made quite the journey — raised in Cold Lake, transported in an oxygenated trailer tank, and carefully released into the reservoir by netting to protect the sensitive young fish.
This introduction is a part of measures aimed at better controlling the carp population. Why walleye? They’re part of a long-term plan to help balance the ecosystem and reduce the number of carp. And speaking of carp… Alberta Environment and Parks has already netted and removed over 119,000 carp of all sizes from the reservoir!
Local residents, avid anglers and students from the Youngstown and Berry Creek Schools came to watch the Walleye find their new home at Blood Indian.
