Community Conversation: The Future of the CJ Peacock Centre

Community Conversation: The Future of the CJ Peacock Centre

Special Areas is continuing a community conversation about the future of the CJ Peacock Centre in the Hamlet of Cereal.

In late 2025, the Special Areas Advisory Council directed that Special Areas should stop operating the CJ Peacock Centre after 2026. Because Special Areas does not operate other community halls in the region, residents are now being asked to help shape what happens next.

Public Engagement

On March 5, 2026, Special Areas attended the Cereal Community Centre (CCC) Annual General Meeting to listen to local perspectives and answer questions. An information sheet was also shared to outline the building’s history, current operating costs, known maintenance needs, and possible future options.

What We Heard

At the meeting, residents shared a range of concerns and considerations, including:

  • Rising utility, insurance, and facility management costs
  • Questions around liability and responsibility if the building is community‑operated
  • Challenges maintaining and repairing an aging facility
  • Difficulty raising enough revenue due to limited use and outdated spaces
  • Concerns about long‑term sustainability, volunteer capacity, and fundraising

Many participants expressed a desire to see the CJ Peacock Centre remain available to the community only if a realistic and sustainable model can be achieved.

How We Are Engaging

On April 22, Special Areas hosted a public meeting in Cereal to share what we heard and to present options for the community to consider. Information packages were provided, including responses to questions raised at the community’s March 2026 AGM meeting. You can download the information packages & responses to community questions here.

  • What would be needed for a community group to take on operations in 2027
  • How Special Areas would support community operations of the facility
  • How community members can share feedback on these options

As a part of this public meeting, residents in the Cereal area were asked to share feedback through an online survey.

This survey will be open until June 30, 2026. Results from the survey will be summarized and shared with Special Areas Advisory Council and Board, Cereal residents, and posted on our public engagement page.

What Happens Next

Special Areas will continue operating the CJ Peacock Centre through the end of 2026. Before then, the community will need to decide whether:

  • A local group will take ownership and operate the facility,
  • The building will close if no group comes forward, or
  • A longer‑term alternative, such as a new community facility, should be explored.

Feedback from this engagement, along with financial and facility information, will help inform next steps. Special Areas is committed to sharing updates with residents as decisions move forward.
